Robert
Mager earns the ISPI Armed Forces Chapter's Lifetime Achievement
Award
The following
letter highlights the widespread and lasting impact that Dr.
Robert F. Mager's books have had on generations of military
personnel
8 January 2002
Dear Dr. Mager:
I can remember when I reported
to my first assignment with the Army's Training and Doctrine
Command (TRADOC) after completing my doctoral coursework at
Syracuse University. I showed up for my first day of courses
that were to teach me the Army way of training, and
was promptly handed as my textbooks a series of publications
with titles like "Analyzing Performance Problems,"
"Preparing Instructional Objectives," and "Measuring
Instructional Results." Even in the Army, it seems, the
name of Bob Mager was well known!
During my subsequent service,
this has been confirmed again and again. There are many constants
in Army life - things that seem to remain the same, almost
waiting to comfort you, at every new duty station - and throughout
TRADOC (and now, I find, in other services as well!) the "Mager
Six-Pack" is one of them. This anecdote serves as one
illustration of the impact your work has had on military educators
and trainers during the course of your illustrious career.
As one of the great scholars who laid the foundation for what
has become the modern military education and training system,
the legacy of your leadership can only be described as staggering.
Frequently called "the most
widely read, influential writer in training and education
today," you have shaped the lives of generations of military
trainers and training developers, and helped lead us in the
transition from traditional training to Human Performance
Improvement. Through them, you have touched the lives of every
soldier, sailor, airman, and marine who has passed through
any military training institution in the United States, and
many in our allied nations as well. It is thus with great
pleasure and humility that I have the privilege of presenting
you with the ISPI Armed Forces Chapter's Lifetime Achievement
Award.
Thank you, on behalf of a grateful
nation.
Sincerely,
James B. Ellsworth, Ph.D.
